A Moody Summer Couples Session at Sylvan Lake, Alberta
A Picture-Perfect Summer Wedding at Heritage Park
Some sessions just have a feeling to them from the moment they start. This evening at Sylvan Lake was one of those nights.
The sky was hazy with smoke, softening the sunset into the dreamiest muted tones. The lake was calm and quiet, and the whole evening had this peaceful, almost cinematic mood to it.
I’ve known Kai for a while now, so getting to photograph this chapter of his life felt extra special. It was also my first time meeting Payton, and within minutes it was obvious how naturally they fit together. They were playful, relaxed, and completely wrapped up in each other in the best way.
We started the session at the Ice Cream Shop and finished down by the docks where the lake stretched out endlessly behind them. The smoky skies created the softest light, giving everything this warm, moody glow.
One of the most fun parts of the evening was when we brought out the paddle board. Instead of staying on shore, Kai and Payton climbed onto it together and drifted out onto the calm water. The lake was almost perfectly still, reflecting the soft sky around them. Watching them sit out there, wrapped up in each other while floating in the middle of the lake, felt incredibly peaceful.
It was simple, romantic, and completely them. Sessions like this are my favourite — not overly posed, just two people enjoying being together in a beautiful place.
Looking back at these photos now feels even more special knowing that Payton is now Kai’s fiancée (Stay tuned for their stunning lantern chapel proposal session). At the time, this was simply a fun couples session — an evening spent on the lake documenting their connection and the season of life they were in together.
Kai and Payton, thank you for trusting me to capture these moments. It was such a beautiful night at Sylvan Lake, and I’m so grateful I got to document it.
